Located in the heart of central Florida, Ocala Golf Club boasts a heritage that dates back to the early 20th century. Originally established in 1908, the course has witnessed the evolution of golf in America. With a lush landscape surrounded by towering oaks and serene lakes, it’s no wonder the founders chose this picturesque setting to create a golfing haven.
As I arrived at the Ocala Golf Club, I couldn’t help but notice the beautiful surroundings that awaited me. The course was in decent condition, although I did encounter a few areas that needed some attention. Nevertheless, it didn’t deter me from having a fantastic day of golf. The weather, on the other hand, was sweltering during the front nine, which made every swing a test of endurance. However, the heat couldn’t dampen my spirits as I embarked on this golfing adventure.
One of the highlights of the day was the chance encounter with Rhett, a skilled golfer hailing from Ohio but now a proud Florida resident. Playing alongside Rhett was an absolute pleasure, as his expertise on the course was evident from the start. Throughout the round, we exchanged stories and tips, making the entire experience even more enjoyable.
Front Nine:
The front nine of Ocala Golf Club reveals an interesting and uncommon layout. In an intriguing twist, the course features three par 5’s and three par 3’s, setting the tone for an exhilarating golfing experience from the very first hole. This unique arrangement challenges golfers with a variety of shot selections and distances, ensuring that no two holes feel alike.
The front nine started under the scorching Florida sun, presenting some initial challenges. Nevertheless, I managed to maintain a steady performance, finishing with a 43. However, the 8th hole proved to be my Achilles heel, as I found myself in a tricky situation in the right side bunker. After a challenging escape shot that overshot the green, I ended up with a frustrating six on that par 3.
Back Nine:
As the day progressed and the temperature seemed to relent slightly, my game on the back nine seemed to improved. Despite a few mishaps with duffed chips that led to wasted strokes, I managed to find my rhythm and finished with a 42.
The highlight of my round came on hole 16. I shanked my drive left onto the fairway of the adjacent 17th However, I managed to make a nice 130-yard uphill chip, securing a birdie for an unexpected moment of triumph.
The Final Score:
At the end of an eventful day, I signed off with a score of 85. While I was content with my performance, there were a few shots I wished I could have back. Nonetheless, I embraced the unpredictable nature of golf and understood that every round is an opportunity to learn and grow.
Among the few gripes of the day was the sluggishness of my golf cart. Despite the minor inconvenience, it did little to detract from the overall experience of the day.
The Ocala Golf Club not only offers a collection of captivating holes and a rich historical backdrop but also presents a tremendous value for golf enthusiasts. At a modest price of $44, this course provides an exceptional golfing experience that won’t break the bank.
